In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

Anova Makes In Vitro and the Start of Your Fertility Journey Achievable.

There are many fertility treatments available to support your family building goals. IVF is a well-established and effective treatment that many individuals take to overcome fertility challenges. With our state of the art lab and our team of experts we can help you on your family building journey.

An Overview of IVF

When a baby is conceived naturally, the woman’s egg is fertilized by sperm in her fallopian tube. In IVF, this process happens in our Next Generation embryology lab.

We combine the egg and sperm, creating embryos, then monitor the embryo’s development until it reaches a certain stage. Using preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A), we test each embryo to determine those with the greatest potential for live birth. Our lab is specifically engineered to provide the optimal growth conditions for your embryos. When the time is right, we select the best embryo to implant into the woman’s uterus, where it will grow.

Good Questions to Ask When Considering IVF

  • What is the most efficient process?

IVF maximizes your chances of conception and in certain cases is the most direct path to growing your family.

  • Should I do IUI or go straight to IVF?

The reality is that IUI is much less efficient at making a baby than IVF is and this is especially dependent on your age. If you’re comparing IUI with IVF and wondering where your money is best spent, make sure you understand your diagnosis. Not all patients are good candidates for all treatment options. Please speak to one of our fertility specialists for more information.

  • What is PGT-A?

Preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A) is a genetic test that can be performed on embryos to identify any with abnormal chromosome numbers (aneuploidy). This test is performed on a developing embryo, prior to the embryo transfer step in IVF treatment, with the goal of improving the likelihood of implantation.

  • What are your financial considerations?

Do you know if your employer or insurance provider provides fertility benefits? If you’re an Ontario resident, are you eligible and can you afford to wait for a funded cycle? Depending on your diagnosis, IUI may be a good use of limited funds or one-time medication coverage.

Additional Services

ICSI-IVF

With In Vitro Fertilization using intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI-IVF), a single sperm cell is injected directly into the cytoplasm of the egg. This can increase the number of eggs that are successfully fertilized, boosting the chances of a successful pregnancy. We may recommend this measure based on a number of factors, including:

  • Advanced
Maternal Age
  • Impaired Sperm
Production, Function
or Quality
  • An Ovulation Disorder, Such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
  • Blockage or Damage of the Fallopian Tubes
  • Two or More Unsuccessful IUI Attempts
  • Endometriosis
  • Uterine Fibroids
  • Unexplained Infertility

Donor Sperm

Donor sperm is an option you may use on your fertility journey.

Donor Egg

Using donor eggs is an option available to people who may not have eggs of their own or are having difficulty becoming pregnant.

IUI

IUI is the process of placing sperm into the uterus, bypassing the vagina and cervix, and increasing the chances of pregnancy

Embryo Testing

Preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A) is a genetic test that can be performed on embryos to identify any with abnormal chromosome numbers (aneuploidy). This test is performed on a developing embryo, prior to the embryo transfer step in IVF treatment, with the goal of improving the likelihood of implantation.

The IVF Journey

IVF is safe and effective for individuals and couples looking to conceive. If we decide together that it’s the right treatment option for you, we’ll be with you every step along the way.

  • 1.

    Consultation

To help us understand your goals and concerns, we will discuss your medical history and design an individual path to parenthood just for you.

  • 2.

    IVF Treatment

IVF treatment begins with stimulation of the ovaries with fertility and other medications to allow for multiple follicles to grow and mature.

    • Most follicles contain eggs and are monitored for their growth.
    • You are stimulated using medications and dosages that are optimized for your medical profile.
    • During this process, we monitor you closely to ensure that you are safe, that you are responding as expected to the medications, and that your follicles are developing as expected.
  • 3.

    Egg Retrieval

You’re placed under conscious sedation and your physician collects the eggs from your ovaries.

  • 4.

    Fertilization

Our embryology laboratory fertilizes the egg using sperm.

    • In the lab, specialized culture conditions are used that greatly enhance the chances of a successful fertilization and embryo development. Our lab is mechanically controlled to ensure the optimal environment for the embryos. Their health and growth is continuously monitored resulting in the very best chances for successful pregnancy.
    • This is where IVF gets its name: ‘in vitro’ (in glass) fertilization.
  • 5.

    Embryo Monitoring, Development and Testing

    • Embryos are carefully observed during their development in the laboratory and are graded for quality of the blastocyst on day 5. In addition to this grading we the biopsy the embryo, through a process called PGT-A  which is a sophisticated genetic test that will identify any issues
    • We freeze all the viable embryos which you can use at any time. The embryos can remain frozen for many years.
  • 6.

    Selection and Implantation

The best embryo is chosen for transfer into your uterus.

    • We select the best embryo that was cryopreserved (frozen) for your future use.
  • 7.

    Pregnancy
Confirmation

Your next visit to the clinic is two weeks after the transfer. We run a blood test to confirm that a pregnancy has been created.
